PECS

What do our PECS involve?

PECS is a one-of-a-kind alternative or additional communication method developed in the United States in 1985 by Andy Bondy, PhD, and Lori Frost, MS, CCC-SLP. In the Delaware Autism Program, PECS was first used with pre-school kids with autism. Since then, PECS has been effectively applied to millions of learners of every age group who have unique cognitive, physical, and communication issues across the world.

PECS is divided into six steps…

Beginning with educating a user to send a single image of the desired object or activity to a “communicative partner,” who immediately recognizes the interchange as a request. The method then goes on to teach image discrimination and sentence formation. Individuals are trained to employ modifiers, answer questions, and remark at the more advanced levels.

PECS’s primary purpose is to develop functional communication. According to research, some PECS learners acquire speech. Others may opt for a speech-generating gadget (SGD). The volume of research supporting the efficacy of PECS as an evidence-based treatment is large and growing.
