Neuro Developmental Approach [NDT]

What do our Newuro Developmental Approach involve?

Neuro-Development Treatment (NDT) is a type of therapy used by physical, occupational, and speech-language therapists for individuals with movement and muscle control challenges. These motor control issues are typically referred to as neuro-motor or neuromuscular dysfunction, and can seriously affect body movement, muscle control, muscle coordination, posture and balance.

What is commonly included in NDT therapy sessions?

  • Examination, evaluation, and intervention or therapy based on a continuous clinical problem-solving process that builds on the individual’s strengths while simultaneously taking into account their limits.
  • Task Analysis: NDT physicians assess each person’s ability to fully engage in life by observing functional activities and restrictions, as well as the postures and movements that support and limit these functions.
  • “Systems Theory” is used to assess the fundamental causes why a person moves the way she or he does. The musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, sensory, respiratory, and other bodily systems are thoroughly evaluated. Task-specific strengths, weaknesses, and associated components are recognised and addressed precisely to improve function.
  • Each therapy session is focused on functional outcomes set by the family and the client, with defined functional goals that are pre and post-tested within each treatment session. The intervention of the NDT therapist is guided by these result aims.
  • Two-way communication between therapist and client in order to reach the objective of better motor function, maximising task performance, and obtaining the skills required for the individual to live the most manageable and complete life possible.
